Looking Back at May

May was a super busy month for me.  My life has never been the same since I opened up my Vanilla Print (my small print shop).  I almost work 7 days a week and had very little quality time with my family.  It’s really very tiring.   This likewise affected my bloggin habit… I almost had little time for my extra curricular activities over the internet.

A lot of events hapenned in May and one of the biggest not just for the month but I guess for the entire entertainment history of my country, is the Hayden Kho Sex Scandal with Katrina Halili and other ladies he got a relationship with.  It was an awful scenario and the sex hungry people are feasting on the said scandal.    I am in no way a fan of Katrina Halili, in fact I don’t like her as an artist because she seems to have this insatiable need to have cosmetic surgery done on her face.   Right after the scandal broke out, I could only emphatize with the sad faith she had with her failed illicit affair with Dr. Hayden Kho (yes he is a doctor who filmed his intimate moments with these beautiful  celebrities).    Even if I am not a fan, I just wish Katrina will be strong enough to face this humiliation.   I fully condemn Dr. Hayden’s act.  This is the worst thing that you can do to a single lady.

The other big news is the sudden death of the South Korean President, Roh Mu Hyun.  Since I am a big admirer of South Korea’s nation and culture,  I am saddened by this event.   What is more trivial is that the death is actually a suicide.  The former South Korean President could not longer bear the humiliation of being dragged into the graft and corruption scandal he is into.  Being one of the prime movers of the Korean economy,  he is strongly remembered as a good leader but such scandal has tarnished his name deeply leading to suicide.  I  have known Korea to have high suicidal tendency…. even a former strong man submitted himself to such act.    I just couldn’t imagine how they value their image and moral status — I wish that our politicians get inflicted with such shame.

Such a big busy May… and its June now.

Return of the Remakes

For the longest time local channels are battling over ‘reality based’ programs.  If I may recall GMA-7’s Extra! Extra! hosted by Paolo Bediones and Miriam Quiambao started it all when they tried playing a role of certain characters far from who they are.  I remember Paolo playing the role of a taong grasa (colloquial for dirty man on streets).  They hit the mass tv viewers when they did this. The next thing that happened is the unprecedented rise of the reality-based shows.

Along with the success of reality based shows, Korean drama likewise invaded Pinoy television.   There was a period when the two giant networks in the Philippines (ABS CBN and GMA) had a regular slot for a Korean Drama on their primetime line up.  Some of the most successful Korean Dramas were Lovers in Paris, Full House, Stairways to Heaven, Love Letters – Winter Sonata, the phenomenal hit Pricess Hours and a lot more.

Now it seems that great movies, dramas and komiks hits are making a comeback via TV.  Darna just made GMA-7 and Angel Locsin equally brighter.  This I think also triggered ABS CBN to create a TV version of Panday (which was unfortunately not as highly successful as it was expected to be).  Pedro Penduko on the other hand was a big hit of ABS CBN during Saturdays.  It also paved the way for Matt Evans’ stardom.  Entering the drama arena is the remake of ‘Pati ba Pintig ng Puso’ by GMA-7 and Natutulog ba ang Diyos by ABS CBN -2.  Both dramas were great movie success.  Some dramas seem to be a remake of  successful  drama series in the 80s such as

  • Maria Flordeluna  and Mga Mata ni Anghelita – inspired by the Julie Vega and Janice De Belen dramas
  • Mga Munting Angel sa Langit – reminiscent of the Yagit Days

These could mean two things.  First, Pinoys still love these timeless works of art.  Second, the TV industry is probably formulating new storylines or program and is taking advantage of the waves that remakes are creating.   I am personally enjoying some of it, the classic storylines are still worth watching.  I had to witness how Lavina delivered the famous Cherry Gil line and the wine splashed to Dorina’s face.

The TV industry should be cautious in creating remakes of these timeless classics.  While it is evident that Filipinos are hooked to these dramas and fantaseryes, pinoy tv viewiers are still discriminating.  They would still observe on performances of the artists, unravelling of story and the production design.  You can’t go far beyond the story in putting additional twist or create a pure copy cat.  Relevance from current settings and picking the right artists are some of the key ingredients.  It such a pity when these movies and komiks classics turn into a TV flop…. in that case I simply wanted to remember them as movie blockbuster.

PBB and One Sad Reality

I got the chance to watch Pinoy Big Bropther last Tuesday and I find my self rushing home to watch it at least until yesterday.  I am not really a big fan of reality TV shows, I am able to watch this show once in a while not enough to pin me down the couch.  What caught my attention is the supposedly ‘real’ attitude that one of the remaining housemate is showing on national TV.  I learned that she was voted out by the two toher girls (Bea and Geean) and this made her feel so bad.  She really took it personally and told them they were ‘plastic’ (not showing their true attitude and playing safe to be in the Big 4 — from which the grand winner will be taken.

After the supposed fake nomination (they did not know that its really the people who will be selecting the last 4 housemates), Wendy, the agitated girl started acting up.  She was really terrible accusing the two of playing safe and trying to be nice to her but actually they were jealous of her.  What made her think this way?  She and one of the guys named Bruce are having a romantic fling.  She thinks that the two other girls are jealous because she thinks that they loveteam inside the house is a hit outside.  WHAAAAT!  This girl has too much air on her head.  Well I think by nature, Filipinos still wants to see good and acceptable values on what they see.  How could she think that their loveteam is well accepted or a hit when infact the guy she is supposedly having a romantic relationship is in a actually relationship when he entered the house.  He broke with her on national TV. Yuck!

The night when Wendy was so upset, she was drunk.  She was crying and cursing her father.  She keep on mentioning the 1M.  She was totally out of her mind.  Even if she felt that her mom and dad never loved her… it was too much to say that she wished her dad dead?!

There were also several instances when she keeps on ranting to the two girls.  Well its true that what she joined is a reality tv show and her reality is a sad truth on how she has grown.
